BURLINGTON, N.C. — Burlington police say they’re searching for a man who fled the scene after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a train.

According to police, the accident was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Lakeview Drive.

Investigators determined a man was riding a bicycle south on Lakeview Drive when he attempted to cross the railroad crossing.

While attempting to cross, police say the man’s bicycle was struck by a westbound Amtrak passenger train.

The crossing’s stop arms were down at the time, police added.

After the collision, police say the man fled the scene.  Witnesses said he was last seen pushing the damaged bicycle along South Schools Street.

The man’s condition was not known as of 8 a.m. Friday.

He is described as a white male between the ages of 30 and 40 years old.  He was wearing a dark jacket and “toboggan-style cap” at the time of the incident, police said.

The tracks were closed and the train was delayed for about an hour while authorities investigated, police said.

Police noted the man “had been on the Norfolk Southern railroad property illegally.”

Police are investigating and ask that anyone with further information would call them or Crimestoppers at (336) 229-7100.
