WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police said a man was injured after he crashed his car into a guard rail and was hit by another car while running across the highway.

Authorities said 26-year-old Jeremy Shermel Phifer was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla on Northbound Highway 421 just north of Peace Haven Road around 7:43 p.m. Tuesday with two passengers.

Police said Phifer lost control of the car and collided with a guard rail, causing a single-vehicle car wreck.

Phifer and his passengers got out of the damaged car and ran across Southbound Highway 421 just south of Peace Haven Road, police said.

Officials said Phifer was struck by a 2000 Cadillac sedan southbound on Highway 421 just prior to Peace Haven Road.

Authorities said he was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with life threatening injuries and is listed in critical condition.

Police did not report any other injuries.
