TRINITY, N.C. — State troopers say a school bus crashed into the back of a garbage truck Thursday morning in Randolph County.

Trooper S.D. Vaughn says the accident happened around 8 a.m. on Finch Farm Road near Old Mountain Road.

According to Vaughn, the bus struck the back of a garbage truck, which had stopped to pick up a garbage can.

Vaughn says the bus driver, 53-year-old Mary Whipple of High Point, was taken by ambulance to High Point Regional Hospital for treatment.  The extent of her injuries was not clear.

Whipple is charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Twelve children were on the bus at the time, but no serious injuries were reported among them.

One child was taken to the hospital by their parent to be checked out, Vaughn said.

Vaughn says the bus was #51 serving Archdale-Trinity Middle School.

The garbage truck is owned by Handy’s Garbage of Archdale.
