RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison says a 16-year-old and 15-year-old have been charged with fatally shooting a husband and wife in their home.

According to WRAL, the bodies of Jose Samual Flores Mendoza and Maria Saravia Mendoza, both 34, were found around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 5 at their home at 708 Colonial Drive.

Isrrael Vasquez, 16, of Raleigh, and his 15-year-old nephew, whose identity is not being released due to his age, were arrested Wednesday afternoon, WRAL reports.

Sheriff Harrison says investigators are looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang-related.

“This was not a random act, but unfortunately, the victims in this killing probably did not have anything to do with it,” Harrison told WRAL.  “At this point in the investigation, we do not see any indication that they even knew these people.”

A search warrant revealed Thursday that a man who previously lived in the victims’ home is a “high-ranking gang member” who “might have been the target,” according to WRAL.

Both suspects are charged with two counts of murder, felony conspiracy, first-degree burglary and possession of stolen property.  Vasquez also faces a charge of possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
