Officer fatally shoots suspect during traffic stop in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police say one of their officers fatally shot an armed man Thursday morning during a traffic stop in Fayetteville. 

According to police, the officer initiated the stop on a Ford Explorer shortly before 6:15 a.m. near the intersection of Morganton Road and Virginia Avenue. 

Police say the driver continued onto South Virginia Avenue before stopping at a dead end at the end of the road. 

“During the course of the traffic stop, the officer shot the armed suspect,” police said in a news release. 

The suspect, who was identified as 22-year-old Nijza Lamar Hagans, died at the scene, police said. 

The N.C. SBI is investigating the incident, per standard procedure.  The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duties. 

The name of the officer has not been released. 

No other details were provided.
