CHICAGO — An investigation is underway after more than a dozen human heads were reportedly discovered in a shipment at the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, U.S. Customs officials found the shipment of 18 heads on Monday.

The heads — still covered with skin — were sent to Chicago from outside the country, the Sun-Times reports. It was not clear what country they arrived from or what their intended destination is.

The heads “appear to be medical samples,” a Department of homeland Security spokesman told the Sun-Times.

On Tuesday morning, the spokesman told the Sun-Times that investigators are working to confirm the heads are “legitimate medical specimens.”

The spokesman said human body parts can be transported legally if they’re documented and intended for medical purposes.

“It is a potentially legitimate medical shipment,” the spokesman told the Sun-Times. “We’ve seen it at various ports in the nation.”

No foul play is suspected, but the heads have been sent to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office for further inspection.
