RALEIGH, N.C. — A total of eleven sports figures in the state are being inducted into the 2013 North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame; and several have ties to the Piedmont Triad.
Among the inductees are former NFL star and Elon University standout Rich McGeorge, long-time Special Olympics golfer Marty Sheets, Winston-Salem tennis icon Mildred Southern, fast-pitch softball legend Wade Garrett, and Marion Kirby, who has coached at Page High School and Greensboro and Guilford colleges.
Also recognized are Carolina Hurricanes director Ron Francis, former UNC Chapel Hill basketball coach Bill Guthridge, the Charotte-born and former Cincinnati Reds infielder Tommy Helms, Tar Heel and Washington Redskins running back Kelvin Bryant, sports writer Bob Quincy, and celebrated photographer Hugh Morton.
The 2013 ceremony marks the institution’s 50th anniversary.
