HURDLE MILLS, N.C. — Two teenagers died and two others were injured over the weekend as the result of a single-vehicle crash in Orange County.
According to WRAL, William Daniel Chase Underhill, 16, of Durham, and Kacie Leann Chamberlain, 16, of Rougemont, were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.
Both attended Orange County High School. A classmate told WRAL they were “really good people” and that “everyone loved them.”
McCray Williams, 15, of Mebane, and Sam Whaley, 16, suffered serious injuries. They were both in fair condition at Duke Hospital as of Sunday, WRAL reports. WTVD reports Williams and Whaley attend a different school.
State troopers tell WRAL the teens were in a pickup truck on Little River Church Road around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when Underhill lost control about one mile from Mary Hall Road. After the pickup went off the left side of the road, troopers said Underhill over-corrected and went off the right side of the road, hitting a mailbox and a tree.
Investigators told WRAL speeding was a factor in the crash.
All of the teens were in the front seat of the pickup and none wearing a seat belt, WRAL reports.
“If they had been wearing their seat belt and going the speed limit, all of this could have been avoided,” Trooper Greg Ingram told WRAL.
