Asheboro fire chief retires after nearly 42 years

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Asheboro Fire Chief Jim Smith recently retired after nearly 42 years of service to the Asheboro Fire Department.

The Asheboro Courier-Tribune reported that Smith, 69, was the fourth chief in Asheboro’s history. His replacement will reportedly be selected next year.

The paper reported that Smith was born and raised in what is now north Asheboro and started becoming interested in firefighting before he turned 16.

He had also tried other lines of work including an ambulance driver, bookkeeper and funeral director, according to the paper.
