ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- Officials say a fire at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Rockingham County Sunday night is being considered arson.

Investigators say the fire was reported around 10 p.m. at the church’s location at 3708 Ellisboro Road.

Authorities say about 50 firefighters from at least seven different departments had the situation under control in under an hour. Around 50 church-goers were also on the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials say the blaze started in the back of the fellowship hall. A broken window was reportedly found at the scene.

Church members say a Christmas play practice took place at the church around 5 p.m. Rev. Craig Toth says the play will be performed at 7 p.m. Monday.

The fire is about five miles from a fire reported at a church in Stokesdale Saturday night. Investigators describe that fire as "suspicious."

No other details were released.
