BISCOE, NC — An East Montgomery Middle School teacher resigned Monday and may face a charge of simple assault after injuring a student during gym class Thursday.
According to Detective Kelley Howell with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the teacher had asked the student to stand up and explain the game of dodgeball for his gym class.
Det. Howell said the teacher then told the student to stop “stuttering and mumbling” during his explanation multiple times before picking up a dodgeball and hitting the student in the back of the head with it.
Det. Howell said the 13-year-old male student sustained a “slight concussion.”
The teacher resigned from East Montgomery Middle School Monday.
Det. Howell and a Montgomery County Schools spokesman said the student has already returned to school.
Montgomery County Schools released a statement Tuesday, saying, “All inappropriate behavior is handled according to board policy and/or applicable laws. Please know that our district’s top priority is to ensure a safe environment for all students.”
The 29-year-old teacher in question had been at EMMS since August of 2011.
