DAVIE COUNTY, N.C. -- An official with Davie County Schools confirmed a teacher found a loaded gun inside a third grader’s backpack on Monday.
Stephanie Koefed, a spokesperson with Davie County Schools, said a teacher was helping a third grader organize his backpack when the teacher found a small handgun inside the bag.
“The teacher immediately took the book bag and student to the office and law enforcement and parents were notified. At no point was any student or staff member in danger,” Koefed said in a statement.
The boy will be charged with possession of the firearm on school property. Juvenile court will handle his charges.
The child's mother, Felice Schuerman, is charged with failure to store a firearm to protect a minor.
Police Chief Bobby West said he does not believe the boy had "bad intentions," but rather he thinks he put the gun in his backpack "out of curiosity."
The school system is planning disciplinary action against the child, but will not disclose how.
Davie County School policy states, that any child caught with a weapon on school grounds faces long term suspension, possibly for the entire year.
