Salvation Army collecting canned hams for families in need

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- FOX8's Shannon Smith on Tuesday was at the Bicycle Toy and Hobby shop on North Main Street, where The Salvation Army is collecting canned hams for families in need.

The Salvation Army's goal with the "Hammin' it Up" event is to collect 750 hams that will be distributed to families around Christmas.  The families who will benefit from the program have already applied for assistance.

The initiative began at 6 a.m. and will continue until the goal is reached.  Monetary donations are also being accepted, in which case $10 will cover the cost of a ham.
