SALISBURY, N.C. — Deputies in Rowan County are investigating an ATV accident that killed one young boy and seriously injured another on Thanksgiving Day.

According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the accident was reported around 3 p.m. outside a home on Country Hill Drive.

Witnesses told deputies an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy had been riding a blue Arctic Cat 550 ATV “for most of the day” before the accident occurred.

Deputies say one witness told them the 7-year-old was driving the ATV with the 11-year-old in the passenger seat when they “came around the left side of the (home) at a high rate of speed.”  During the turn, the witness said the ATV “made a complete rollover.”

The 7-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The 11-year-old was flown from the scene to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.  Deputies said he was “seriously injured.”  His condition as of Friday morning is not known.

In addition to the sheriff’s office and EMS, the Locke Fire Department and N.C. Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.
