GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A new airline is now flying out of PTI Airport in Greensboro.
A Frontier Airlines flight took off Saturday, carrying passengers from Greensboro to Orlando for the first time.
"It's really cool,” said one passenger as she boarded with her daughter. “That's what I've been saying on the way up here. We're going to be on the first flight out of Greensboro on Frontier.”
Amid balloons and excitement, Kevin Baker with PTI Airport Authority said they consider Frontier a budget airline.
"$57 each way," Baker said. "Whenever you have lower fares, it draws folks in from farther out. They see the fares, and they're going to come to this airport to fly."
Officials said Frontier is the first new carrier for the airport in four years.
Right now, Orlando is the only destination offered by Frontier at PTI, but with the airline's main hub in Denver, Baker is hoping Frontier will become the Triad's gateway to the West.
"Having connections over Denver, to get to points West, anywhere in California, Seattle, Phoenix. I think that's just going to be really huge."
Baker believes this is all a big step closer to being a one-stop-shop for flying in the Triad.
"If we could have destinations on low-cost carriers to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle and Denver, I think it would be just terrific."
