MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Republican leaders in a northwest North Carolina Senate district have chosen an outgoing House member as the party’s nominee after the incumbent died last month.
The Mount Airy News reported that GOP leaders voted Sunday to make Rep. Shirley Randleman of Wilkes County the nominee for a Senate seat covering Wilkes, Surry and Stokes counties.

The late Sen. Don East died two weeks ago and is on Tuesday’s ballot. Randleman will succeed East if East receives more votes that Democrat Ric Marshall, who lost to East two years ago.

Randleman is a two-term House member who decided not to seek re-election to that chamber this year.

Six candidates sought the Senate nomination. It took five votes by the local GOP executive committee to choose a winner.
