HIGH POINT, N.C. -- UNC Health Care System is taking on oversight of High Point Regional Health System in a partnership announced Thursday.

According to a news release, both health-care systems approved the acquisition unanimously Tuesday. The oversight will begin in 2013.

"As a board member, a business owner and resident of the High Point community I speak on behalf of our entire Board that we are confident UNC Health Care is the best choice for our hospital," said Owen Bertschi, High Point Regional Health System Board Chairman.

The decision culminates a more than seven-month search by High Point Regional that included pursuing request for proposals from other health-care systems in the state.

Officials did not name the other systems that responded.

UNC Health Care said it plans to maintain the current management of High Point Regional Health System through local leadership.

UNC does not plan on any layoffs or changes in pay rates or benefits of current employees of High Point Regional Health System, according to the release.Read more: Official release from High Point Regional
