WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– Trader Joe’s and Gander Mountain are both opening new stores in Winston-Salem in the coming weeks, and both began accepting applications this week.
On Monday, more than 500 people showed up to hand deliver applications to Trader Joe’s at Thruway Shopping Center.
Combined, the two stores will add roughly 100 new full and part-time jobs to the community.
Chanea Wilson says she waited in line for hours to turn in her application at Trader Joe’s.
“I’ve been unemployed since February of this year. Hopefully I can get a job,” said Wilson.
While Trader Joe’s will not comment on exactly how many people it will take to open their new Winston-Salem store on October 26th, many business analysts say the average store employs around 40 people.
“I love grocery stores. I think it’d be a good fit for me cause they are a really laid-back company and I think I’d enjoy working for them,” said Bonnie King while waiting in line.
Gander Mountain is looking to hire 20 full-time employees and about 50 part-time workers at it’s store on the corner of Hanes Mall Boulevard and Stratford Road. Applications are now being taken online, only.
According to U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics over the past 5 years there’s been a 13 percent drop in retail jobs in the Piedmont. For many, news of brand-new positions opening is good.
“We are due and I think this is going to help a lot of people,” said job-hunter Bonnie King.
Trader Joe’s will accept applications at the store from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. through Saturday, September 29th.
