Deputies: Woman hospitalized in Davie Co. shooting
DAVIE CO., N.C. — Deputies said a woman is in critical condition after her husband tried to kill her before killing himself Sunday morning in Davie County.
Officials with the Davie County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around 5:30 a.m. at 628 Riverbend Drive in Advance.
Newspaper delivery personnel called 911 about 6:30 a.m. after finding a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
Responding officers said Sarah Browder Harris, 29, of Greensboro, was shot in the neck and shoulder. Kirk Walter Harris, 26, of Jacksonville, N.C., was dead in the driveway of his parents’ home across the street.
Davie County Sheriff Andy Stokes said the couple got into a fight that turned violent.
“They actually left the house, went into the driveway. (Sarah Harris) had crossed the street into the neighbor’s yard where she was shot,” he said.
Sheriff Stokes said Kirk Harris shot his wife at least twice and then took his own life.
Kirk Harris was an active duty Marine based at Camp LeJeune, recently back from Afghanistan.
“He was on leave and visiting with his wife at his parents house. His parents were not home at the time of the shooting,” Stokes said.
Officials said Sarah Harris is a recent graduate of Leon’s Beauty School in Greensboro. Authorities said the couple had been married for about a year and did not have any children.
Deputies said Sarah Harris was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and is still in the intensive care unit.
Law enforcement officials said the weapon was recovered at the scene and no other people are believed to have been involved.
The investigation is ongoing and no other information was released.
