Park Officials: Don’t feed the geese in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The parks and recreation department is asking residents not to feed the geese with hopes of discouraging them from taking up residence at local parks.

The next time you go to a Greensboro park, the Parks and Recreation Department wants you to leave the bread, crackers and popcorn at home.

Park officials say that feeding the geese has encouraged them to flock area parks which could cause problems such as water pollution, nutritional deficiencies, over population and habitat degradation.

Regional Park Superintendent Steve Branson says the geese at Country Park are eating the grass faster than they can replace it.

“It’s a lot of added expense for us.  We are trying to re-establish grass in our areas and get it to grow,” said Branson.

Branson feels if people stop feeding the geese and the grass runs out, the geese might look for another feeding spot.
