Surgery has been a time-proven, long-term cure for prostate cancer, especially when the disease is detected at an early stage. Currently, approximately 75 percent of all prostatectomies are now done robotically.
During a prostatectomy, the surgeon not only removes the prostate gland, which is located in a small, confined area of the body, but also reconstructs the urinary tract and part of the pelvic anatomy. Performing this procedure robotically significantly increases the physician’s precision with 360 degree movement, and improves vision with a magnified, three dimensional view of the area.
With traditional prostatectomies, there is greater risk of blood loss which can cause complications and slow a patient’s recovery. Robotic prostatectomy has a decreased risk of blood loss, and a majority of patients are usually up and moving around the day of or after surgery.
