ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Several roads and dozens of homes and businesses have been flooded in Roanoke Rapids after nearly a foot of rain fell in about six hours.

The National Weather Service reports crews had to rescue several people from the flash flood Saturday morning.

Forecasters say at least six inches of rain fell across most of Halifax County, with 11.5 inches of rain reported in Roanoke Rapids. The deluge forced the Roanoke River and other nearby creeks over their banks.

No injuries or deaths have been reported.

The heavy rain has moved out of the area, and the National Weather Service says the rest of Saturday should be dry.
