City approves new YMCA deal in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro’s city council agreed to a partnership with the Hayes-Taylor YMCA, that will allow the Y to move into a bigger building at Barber Park.

“When you look at the nanotechnology center, gateway university, you have the Gateway Gardens, Barber Park and you can imagine situating a YMCA right in the middle of all that activity,” said Larry Burnett, the executive director of the Hayes-Taylor YMCA.

He says the new 55,000 square foot facility they plan to build gives them more space inside, but they’ll also have more outdoor recreation areas, like two new soccer fields.

“The kids will have green space to go out and play. we really value that. we can’t do it here in a safe environment, we can’t do it here because we’re only 50 feet, so we want to get them out in an environment where they can get out and play,” he said.

Under the new agreement with the city, the YMCA will lease space at Barber Park for $1 a year for at least 40 years. After that, the Y will have the option to buy the land.

North Carolina A&T State University already bought the Hayes-Taylor building on the corner of Market and Dudley Streets.
