RALEIGH, N.C. — Authorities in Raleigh have arrested a man after they say he stole more than 2,000 gallons of gasoline from two stations in June.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that 44-year-old William Evans Jr. of Raleigh turned himself in at the Wake County Detention Center after his attorney asked for a court order granting him bond of no more than $4,000. His attorney said he has no criminal record and lives in the area.

A sheriff’s deputy said Evans is free on $1,000 bond.

Fuquay-Varina police say Evans stole 1,900 gallons of gasoline from a local station on June 21. Raleigh police charged that on June 16, Evans stole 350 gallons of gasoline from a Costco store.

Neither police department said how they think the gas was taken.
