WILKESBORO, N.C. -- Lowe's Companies, Inc. hosted a job fair on Tuesday in search of candidates for more than 100 full-time positions the company will fill at its customer support center in Wilkesboro.
The home improvement chain last week announced it would hire 175 workers with an expansion at the customer support center.
Officials at Lowes said they searching for people who have customer care experience but willing to consider people new to customer service.
Charlsey Corley traveled from Caldwell County to attend the job fair. She has been looking for work since she was laid off from a furniture factory position she held for more than twenty years.
“Well, there’s 175 jobs available mostly call center related. But ya know, that’s a job” said Corley.
Jennifer Jetter has a bachelor's degree and is working towards a masters but is considering making a commute to the area despite Wilkes County's 11 percent unemployment rate.
"The market is just tremendously flooded with people looking for job opportunities," said Jetter, "so I just thought I would take the risk, get on the highway, and see what might be here for me."
Since January 2010, the call center has grown from about 350 employees to more than 900 employees.
The new positions are expected to be filled by 2013, at which point the center expects to employ about 1,100 people.
