WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The 3rd, 4th and 5th Street exit ramps on U.S. Highway 52 South in Winston-Salem have been permanently closed.

DOT crews closed the ramps at Exit 110-A for the southbound lanes of the highway around 8 p.m. Thursday.

The exit ramps were originally set to be closed Wednesday night, but rainstorms that evening created safety concerns that prompted a delay.

The southbound entrance ramps and northbound exit ramps were closed earlier this week.  The northbound entrance ramps will be closed in the coming weeks, DOT officials said in a news release.

The closures are part of an effort to streamline traffic on the highway with the intent to reduce congestion and improve safety, DOT officials said.

After the northbound entrance ramps are closed, DOT crews will build a new lane in each direction from U.S. 421/Business I-40 to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
