TROY, N.Y. — Police say a 17-year-old upstate New York girl fatally shot her father as he lay on a couch.

Trinity Copeland of Troy is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 47-year-old Harland Copeland.

Troy Police Capt. John Cooney says she shot him once in the head in the apartment they shared in the industrial city on the Hudson River near Albany. The girl told police he threatened to kill them both unless she shot him.

In a statement to police, Trinity Copeland says her father was angry because she used his ATM card and that he’d been drinking beer when the confrontation happened about 3 a.m. Friday.

Copeland was sent to county jail without bail. It could not immediately be learned if she had a lawyer.
