Tubing trip ends in freak accident
MADISON, N.C. – A young girl is in the hospital after sustaining injuries from a tree that fell on top of her while tubing on Monday.
A 12-year-old girl was tubing on the Dan River in Western Rockingham County when she was knocked unconscious after a tree fell into the water and hit her on the head.
“One of the leaders there said that was the fastest she’s ever seen a tree fall. The girls mentioned they heard sounds that sounded like firecrackers or a gunshot so one of the leaders told them to duck and get of the way,” said Becky Bozorth of Dan River Adventures.
Bozorth arrived at the access point to the Dan River in Madison to pick up the scouts, only to find one of the tubers running to her in a panic.
“She was like yelling at me to call 9-1-1 because someone was hurt and so I asked her what happened and she was like a tree fell on a girl.”
Somehow one of the scout leaders managed to get the girl out of the water. They paddled a half mile to the access point to meet rescue workers.
“I would say the tour guides saved this girl’s life,” said Lindsay Lewis, EMT for Madison Rescue Squad.
According to witnesses, the girl was drifting in and out of consciousness and clearly in a lot of pain.
While paramedics rushed her to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, Bozorth and the scout leaders dealt with the other scouts.
“The rest of the girls were really shook up and that just really got to me because I didn’t want them to be upset and I wanted to make sure the little girl was ok,” said Bozorth.
