Fort Bragg shooter dies of self-inflicted wounds

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — The alleged soldier who fatally shot his superior officer at Fort Bragg and then turned the gun on himself died Saturday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that Ricky Elder, 27, of Hutchinson, Kansas is accused of shooting and killing his battalion commander Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale Thursday.

Tisdale, of Alvin Texas, took command of the 525th Brigade Special Troops Battalion when it was activated in January. He was commissioned as an infantry officer and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1993.

The shooting is being investigated.

A third soldier, 22-year-old Spc. Michael E. Latham of Vacaville, Calif., was wounded and has since been released from the hospital.
