WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — One man is dead and two women injured after a head-on collision that caused a car to catch fire Sunday morning in Winston-Salem.

Benjamin Todd Turpin, 36, of Denton, was driving the wrong way on Highway 52 in a 1991 Buick sedan that struck a 2005 Chevrolet SUV, police said.

Police said Turpin was headed south in the northbound lanes. The wreck occurred north of the Main Street exit, officials said.

Police said Turpin’s Buick caught on fire and he died at the scene.

The SUV was driven by a 37-year-old Kernersville woman who had one female passenger. They were both taken to Baptist Hospital with critical injuries.

Police said it is currently unknown if speed or alcohol were factors. The investigation is ongoing.

Winston-Salem Police said this is the 15th motor vehicle fatality of 2012.
