HOBBSVILLE, N.C. -- Two men are dead after they allegedly attacked a clerk while attempting to rob a general store in Gates County.
According to WTKR-TV, the suspects were both armed with "large guns" when they entered the general store on Acorn Hill Road in Hobbsville and demanded money from the store owner around 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Deputies said the suspects pointed their guns at the store owner before they hit the clerk with both weapons, then kicked him repeatedly on the floor.
While the clerk was being kicked on the floor, deputies said he was able to grab a gun that was hidden underneath the cash register.
The clerk fired the gun at both suspects, hitting one in the stomach and the other in an undisclosed location, the station reports.
The suspect who was hit in the stomach was found dead near a red car outside the store, deputies said.
The other suspect ran away from the scene, but was found dead about 1/4 mile away on the same road, deputies said.
The clerk was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious bruises, WTKR reports.
Deputies said the two suspects fit the description of a duo that’s been robbing Duck Thrus in the area lately, but they're not yet sure if they’re the same.
Authorities have not positively identified the suspects and are still searching for a possible getaway car.
