SHOALS, N.C. — It was about 2:30 in the morning when the Rev. Joseph Fulk III said he got a phone call.

“Our church is on fire and it’s burning,” is how he said he remembers the message from member Anne Moser.

It didn’t seem real to him, he said. It felt like a death call.

It was July 3, 2010, a Saturday, and Fulk was just out of seminary and coming to his first assignment. He’d been a pastor while a student, but the third-generation Methodist minister was supposed to meet the Shoals congregation and stand in the pulpit for the first time as pastor that Sunday.

He said he prayed the whole way on the short drive that night: “Lord, help me. Help me help them.”
