Eden roadside shooting suspect arrested
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A man wanted in connection with a roadside shooting that occurred last October in Eden was arrested this week.
In a news release, Rockingham County deputies said Rontae Devore Hayes, 33, was arrested around 7 p.m. Monday by deputies in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Hayes was wanted in connection with the shooting of 32-year-old Donald Wayne Chambers, who was found lying alongside N.C. 87 North near Meeks Road in Eden around 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 27. The victim, who had been shot four times, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non life-threatening wounds.
Chambers told deputies he was walking down the highway after his Toyota truck broke down. He said he was shot after a man and a woman in separate vehicles confronted him. Chambers also told deputies the man was the shooter, and he did not know either suspect.
Hayes is expected to face one charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
The suspect is currently being held in South Carolina awaiting extradition back to Rockingham County, deputies said.
