20 lbs. of pot found during traffic stop in Lexington
DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies say they found more than 20 lbs. of pot during a routine traffic stop Monday afternoon on I-85 in Lexington.
Tavares Treves Stephens, 29, of Charlotte, was arrested after deputies said they stopped his 2012 Toyota Camry for following too close to another vehicle on I-85 South near Mile Marker 92 in Lexington around 3:15 p.m.
Deputies said they asked for consent to search Stephens’ vehicle after “observing indicators commonly associated with criminal activity.”
The suspect gave consent, after which deputies said they found a large suitcase in the trunk. The suitcase contained about 20 lbs. of marijuana with an estimated street value of $16,000, deputies said.
Along with the pot, deputies said they found more than $9,000 in cash.
Stephens has been charged with trafficking marijuana by possession, trafficking by transportation, trafficking by manufacture, maintaining a vehicle to store drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was jailed in Davidson County under a $100,000 secured bond.
