SPARTA, N.C. — A member of the Sparta Town Council has been charged with sexual offenses involving a girl who was 5 to 6 years old during the period when the alleged abuse happened, according to court documents.

Christopher Ryan Lane, 27, who goes by Ryan Lane, is charged with indecent liberties with a child and sexual offense with a child by an adult, both felonies, and with a misdemeanor count of sexual battery, according to an indictment handed up March 19 by the grand jury in Alleghany County.

He was arrested Friday by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Lane is accused of engaging in a sexual act with the girl between July 1, 2009, and Aug. 23, 2010, according to the indictment. He would have been 24 or 25 at the time.

The indictment for the sexual battery charge says Lane touched the girl’s vagina when he “knew or reasonably should have known that the victim was physically helpless.”
