MORGANTON, N.C. — A former semi-pro football player from Morganton was arrested Saturday after being accused of sexually assaulting two women.

The Morganton News Herald reported that Carl Eugene Smith Jr., 29, of Hickory, was served indictments on two counts each of second-degree rape and second-degree sex offense, according to jail and court records.

The crimes allegedly occurred on May 11, 2011 in Burke County. Investigators would not say why it took so long to make an arrest.

Smith was also charged robbery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen goods in Burke County and failing to appear on six sets of traffic-related charges in Alexander, Lincoln, Onslow and Watauga counties.

The paper reported he was in Catawba County jail under a $294,100 bond. Arraignment is scheduled for April 30 and May 21.
