ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Asheville police say two women who stopped a man from attacking his girlfriend acted bravely, but they aren’t encouraging others to get involved in fights.

37-year-old Candice Allen and 30-year-old Jombya Poore were treated and released from an area hospital for cuts. Police said the two intervened when they saw a 26-year-old man beating his 16-year-old girlfriend Saturday in downtown Asheville.

Witnesses said when confronted, the man pulled a knife on the two women. Lt. Wally Welch says Allen wrestled the knife away from the man.

Welch says Zachary Kurt Hamilton is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a female. It wasn’t known if he has an attorney.

While the actions of the women were brave, police encourage victims and witnesses to always call 911 for help.
