GASTONIA, N.C. — Authorities said a 28-year-old man was shot and killed after he broke into a Gastonia home.

Investigators say the owner of the home called 911 around 1:15 a.m. Saturday and said a man was trying to break in her front door.

Police say moments later Kenneth Cox broke in the back door and was shot by the home’s owner, who was in her bedroom.

Authorities don’t think the intruder and homeowner knew each other. Cox’s father told The Gaston Gazette that his son suffered from mental illness and may have been confused, thinking he was at his own home.

Jeffery Cox says he can’t blame the homeowner for the shooting because she was trying to protect herself.

Police are still investigating the shooting, and no charges have been filed.
