Womble not seeking re-election; Witherspoon to run for empty seat
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Democratic N.C. Rep. Larry Womble announced Tuesday morning that he will not be seeking re-election.
Womble made the announcement over the phone during a news conference at the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Elections. He said Forsyth County Commissioner Everette Witherspoon will be running for his seat as he focuses on his recovery.
Many have speculated for months about whether or not the 70-year-old state representative would run for re-election following a deadly head-on crash from December that left Womble hospitalized in critical condition.
Womble did not address any questions related to the crash during the conference.
Rep. Erline Parmon, who was also present at the conference, made the unrelated announcement that she is running for senate.
