ASHEBORO, N.C. — Crews are expected to be fighting a fire all night in the Birkhead Mountain area west of Asheboro Saturday.
The Courier Tribune reported that the blaze was reported at 6:50 p.m. Five stations responded as late as 9:30 p.m., according to the paper.
The fire reportedly ranged from Cedar Rock Mountain Road, Tot Hill Farm Road, Hopewell Friends Church Road and High Pine Church Road.
Authorities said fire trucks made sure the blaze did not spread to any area homes.
Officials said a 20-man crew with a helicopter from Asheville is expected to arrive early Sunday morning.
Randolph Electric Membership Corp. reported about 60 customers without power at 8:30 p.m. Progress Energy reported 550 customers without power.
A cause has yet to be determined. More details will be released as information becomes available.
