GREENSBORO, N.C. — If you notice smoke coming from sewer pipes and storm drains over the next few weeks, City of Greensboro crews are testing for leaks.

Crews are using the smoke to mark areas where water from storm drain pipes can get into sewage pipes. That can cause water to flow out of manhole covers, like it did at Latham Park.

The city spent $50 million to install a new pipe at Latham Park. However, city officials said the smoke treatment should reduce repair costs.

Crews said there’s a chance that some of the smoke could flow into homes. However, all you have to do to prevent the smoke is pour a gallon of water into drains and tubs, city officials said.
