The West Stokes High School football team beat Kinston on Saturday to win their first state championship.
The 2AA Wildcats came out on top with a 21-14 victory at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Quarterback Austin Flemming scored all three of the Wildcats' touchdowns.
West Stokes hosted a community bonfire Thursday night to celebrate the team's undefeated season, which ended with an impressive 16-0 run including the final championship game.
"This has never happened in Stokes County before. People aren't gonna believe this. This is a wild dream come true," senior linebacker Tyler Bullard said.
Making it through an entire season undefeated is also a first for the school.
"Well, it's four weeks in a row. It's exactly what we've done four weeks in a row. These kids, they don't know how to lose. They just don't. It's nothing we're doing; they just don't know how to lose," head coach Jimmy Upchurch said.
West Stokes joined two other teams from the Piedmont this year in securing 2011 state titles. The Page High School Pirates (4AA) also won a title Saturday against Garner. Northern Guilford (3AA) won the first title Friday night against Crest for the second year in a row.
